What is GMP (grey market premium)?

Before an IPO lists, you will see a number called GMP shared everywhere. It sounds official and important. It is neither. Here is an honest explainer of what grey market premium actually is, and why we treat it with a lot of caution.

Read this first

GMP is unofficial, unregulated and unverified. It is not published by the company, the exchanges or SEBI, it can change or disappear before listing, and it has no reliable link to the actual listing price. BrokerWisely does not endorse GMP or treat it as a signal. We explain it only so you are not misled by it.

What GMP is

Grey market premium is the extra amount, over the IPO issue price, that some traders in an informal market quote for a share before it lists on the exchange. If an issue is priced at a certain amount and the grey market quote is higher, the difference is called the premium. It is a word-of-mouth number that circulates in messaging groups and on social media in the days before listing.

What GMP is not

  • Not official. No company, exchange or regulator publishes GMP. There is no authoritative source and no audit trail behind it.
  • Not regulated. The grey market sits outside the formal, supervised market. There is no oversight and no guarantee any quoted trade actually takes place.
  • Not a prediction. GMP reflects rumour and sentiment on a single day. It can swing or vanish before listing, and shares can list below their issue price whatever the GMP said.
  • Not a reason to apply. A high GMP is not a promise of a listing gain. We never present it as a signal, and neither should anyone else.

Why it spreads so fast

GMP is a single, simple number that looks like it hints at demand, so it travels quickly before an IPO lists. But being shared widely does not make it accurate, official or safe to rely on. Popularity and reliability are two different things, and treating an unverified rumour as data is how people get caught out.

Stick to the facts instead

For an IPO, the things you can actually verify are the price band, the lot size, the open and close dates, and how allotment works. Our IPO calendar keeps to those official facts with nothing ranked, and our guide to how IPO allotment works explains the process without the hype. You can also see this same point in our myths versus facts page.

Common questions

What does GMP stand for?

GMP stands for grey market premium. It is the extra amount, over the IPO issue price, that some unofficial traders quote for a share before it lists on the exchange. It is a rumour-driven number, not an official price and not something the company, the exchange or the regulator publishes.

Is GMP official or regulated?

No. The grey market is an informal, unregulated space with no official record, no oversight and no guarantee that any quoted trade even happens. GMP is not published by SEBI, the exchanges or the company. It should be treated as unverified chatter, not data.

Does GMP predict the listing price?

No. GMP reflects sentiment and rumour on a given day and can change or vanish before listing. Shares can and do list below their issue price whatever the GMP suggested. A high GMP is not a promise of a listing gain, and there is no reliable link between the two.

Why do people talk about GMP so much?

Because it is a simple number that appears to hint at demand, so it spreads quickly on social media and messaging groups before an IPO lists. Being widely shared does not make it accurate or official. Popularity is not the same as reliability.

Does BrokerWisely endorse GMP?

No. We explain what GMP is so you are not misled by it, but we do not endorse it, do not treat it as a signal and never present it as a reason to apply. Our IPO pages lead with official facts, and when we show GMP it always carries a clear warning and is never presented as a signal.
